Training Program

Training for all volunteers is required.

Pre-requisite to classes are:

    1. Complete Volunteer Application and
    2. An interview with the Client Coordinator

Separate classes are offered in the areas of

    1. Hospice
    2. Bereavement
    3. Caregivers

Class contents include (not limited to)

HOSPICE (Twenty-five hours training)

(Some homework is required for this class)

  • The history and philosophy of hospice
  • Communication and listening skills
  • Terminal illness
  • Pain management and symptom control
  • Family dynamics and the social worker
  • Spiritual Care giving
  • Personal death awareness
  • Bereavement and grief issues
  • Funerals

BEREAVEMENT (Six hours training)

  • Grief Overview
  • How to lead groups
  • Six Basic Concepts of Grief
  • Resources for people in grief

CAREGIVERS (Six hours training)

  • Physical and Psychological Changes such as confusion and Stimulation
  • Communication, active listening and assertiveness skills
  • Spiritual Caregiving and the volunteer’s role
